Construction business managers are more optimistic about their upcoming activity
In December 2021, business managers are more optimistic than the previous month about the change in their upcoming activity for the next three months: the corresponding balance of opinion has risen markedly and exceeds more its long-term average.
Likewise, business managers are also more positive concerning their past activity over the last three months. The corresponding balance of opinion has increased again and stays well above its average.
The opinion on order books has improved again
In December 2021, more business managers than last month consider that the level of their order books is higher than usual: the corresponding balance of opinion has risen again, after a strong downturn in October 2021 and remains well above its average. Besides, given their present staff, the construction business managers assess that their order books provide them with 8.9 months of work, an amount of time virtually stable compared to the previous month and significantly above its long-term average (5.9 months).
Staff shortage and supply difficulties keep weighing on production
In December 2021, the production capacity utilisation rate is virtually stable. At 92.5%, it stands above its long-term average (88.8%).
More business managers than last month have reported that obstacles have been limiting their production: their proportion has increased again in December. So, roughly half of business managers are facing difficulties due to workforce shortage, a slightly rebounding share this month, and a third are reporting supply difficulties, more than last month. This two proportions are largely above their long-term average.
At the same time, the share of companies at the limit of their production capacity, that is to say that could not produce more with their current means if they received more orders, is stable at a high level. Since July 2021, nearly half of business managers are reporting to be in this situation, against a third in averagein the long term.
The balance of opinion on the expected prices is stable at a high level
In December 2021, as many business managers as the previous month have reported that they would increase their prices over the next three months. The corresponding balance is stable at its highest level since 1983.

Business managers are more positive than in November on the expected and past change in their workforce size
In December 2021, the balance of opinion of business managers about the upcoming change in their workforce size for the next three months has increased for the third consecutive month and has reached its highest level since April 2008. The balance of opinion on the change in workforce size over the past three months has slightly risen for the fourth month in a row; it remains markedly above its long-term average.
