The opinion of business leaders on the expected development in workforce size has deteriorated slightly
In April 2021, the balance of opinion of business leaders on the change in their workforce size for the next three months has fallen back slightly, whereas the one on the change over the last three months has improved again a little. These two balances remain markedly below their respective averages.
In retail trade (excluding trade and repair of vehicles), the business climate has deteriorated
In April 2021, in retail trade, the business climate has deteriorated, in connection with the strengthening of sanitary measures, particularly affecting specialized retail trade. At 86, the composite indicator has lost 3 points and has returned to its level of last February. It stands therefore markedly below its long-term average (100).
This deterioration is the result of the fall in the forward-looking balances of opinion on the expected workforce size, the ordering intentions - more particularly in specialized trade - and on the general business outlook for the sector. These three balances stand below their average.
The balance of opinion on recent sales has recovered and has returned above its average. The one on expected sales has continued its decline that began in March - it has plunged in specialized trade while it has increased in non-specialized trade - and thus remains significantly below its own.
The balance of opinion on the level of stocks has recovered a little and stands just below its average. The one on expected selling prices is virtually stable, above its own. The balance on the expected workforce size has decreased, while that on the recent workforce size has increased very slightly. These two balances remain well below their average.
In trade and repair of vehicles, the business climate is stable
In trade and repair of vehicles, the business climate is stable. At 96, it remains below its average (100). The increase in the balances of opinion on recent workforce size and on recent sales offsets the fall in the balances on expected workforce size, and, to a lesser extent, on ordering intentions and on the general business outlook for the sector.
The balances of opinion on the general business outlook for the sector and on ordering intentions have fallen moderately. The former is well below its long-term average and the latter has moved away from it a bit.
The balance of opinion on recent sales has bounced back sharply. The one on expected sales has improved again. These two balances remain below their average.
The balances on the level of stocks and on the expected development in selling prices have declined after a rebound in the previous month. The former is well below its average while the latter stands just above its own.
The balance of opinion on the expected change in workforce size for the next three months has decreased, while the one on the change over the last three months has sharply picked up. The former stands just below its average while the latter is above its.

Revisions
The business climate for March 2021 in retail trade and in trade and repair of vehicles as a whole has been revised upwards by one point. This revision is mainly due to the inclusion of late responses from companies.
For more information
The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles” is composed for 70% of retail trade and for 30% of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles.
A balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.
Since the definitive data of April 2020, the way of correcting non-response has been modified. The usual method was to fill in missing answers by carrying on past answers from non-responding companies. The results are now computed on the sole basis of responding companies.
Company responses were collected between 26 March 2021 and 19 April 2021.
