The business leaders have a better opinion on their order books
In February 2021, the opinion of business leaders on their order books has improved overall: fewer business managers than last month have considered their order book to be below normal for this period of the year. The corresponding balance of opinion stands above its long-term average. Given their present staff size, business managers consider that their order books provide 8,3 months of work. Increasing slightly in comparison to last month, this duration is the longest since the beginning of the series in April 1975.
Increasing pressure on productive capacities
In February 2021, the production capacity utilisation rate has increased after a sharp rebound in January. At 90,5%, it has returned to its level of October 2020, above its long-term average (88,7%). At the same time, 40% of the business managers have reported production bottlenecks, a share higher than last month and significantly higher than its long-term average. In particular, almost one in five business managers feels bottlenecks due to workforce shortage, a share higher than in average.
The balance of opinion on prices remains above its long-term average
In February 2021, the balance of opinion of business managers on the future development in their prices has slightly fallen back but remains above its long-term
For further information
A balance of opinion is calculated as the difference between the percentage of “increase” responses and the percentage of “decrease” responses.
All balances of opinion from the survey are published in this Informations Rapides and in the complementary chronological series available online. However, during the health crisis, it appeared that the composite business climate indicator, usually calculated from some of these balances of opinion, tended to smooth the fluctuations in the economic activity measured in building construction. This is why an overhaul of this synthetic indicator is currently being studied in order to, if possible, improve its predictive qualities.
The responses to this survey were collected between 28 January 2021 and 19 February 2021.
Additional information (simplified and detailed methodology, nomenclature, etc.) is available on the “Documentation” tab of the web page of this publication.
