Slight decline in employment balances
In September 2020, the balance of opinion on the expected change in workforce size for the next three months has slightly edged down after having sharply recovered since May. The one on the recent trend of workforce size has slightly dipped too. Both balances stand below their average. These declines reflect the slight falls in retail trade, where these two balances stand well below their average. Conversely, in trade and repair of motor vehicles, the balances of opinion on recent and expected employment have continued to increase, more slightly than in August, and remain above their average.
The business climate in retail trade remains deteriorated ...
In September 2020, in the retail trade subsector, the business climate is stable at a low level. At 85, it remains significantly below its average (100). The increase in the balances on the general business outlook for the sector, on ordering intentions and on recent sales is offset by the decline in employment balances.
… while it has stabilized at a fairly high level in automotive trade and repair
In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate remains above its average At 104, it has gained one point but remains below its high pre-lockdown level (between 108 and 110). The improvement in the balances on recent sales as well as on recent and future trend of workforce size, has been largely offset by the drop in the balances on the general outlook for the sector and on ordering intentions.
Revisions
The subsectoral business climate in retail trade for August 2020 has been revised upwards by one point. This revision is mainly explained by the inclusion of late responses from businesses.

For more information
The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles” is composed for 70% of retail trade and for 30% of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles.
A balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.
Since the definitive data of April 2020, the way of correcting non-response has been modified. The usual method was to fill in missing answers by carrying on past answers from non-responding companies. The results are now computed on the sole basis of responding companies.
