Sharp improvement in the opinion on recent sales

In August 2020, the balance of opinion of business managers on sales over the last three months has continued to recover, much more strongly than in July, and is now close to its long-term average.

The balances of opinion on general business outlook for the sector and on ordering intentions are virtually stable. The former remains significantly below its average, whereas the latter has moved closer to its own. The balance of opinion on expected sales has declined, thus remaining below its average, while the one on expected selling prices has increased again. Finally, the level of stocks are more often deemed lower than normal: the corresponding balance of opinion has gone down for the third consecutive month.

Less and less deteriorated job prospects

In August 2020, the balance of opinion on the expected change in workforce size for the next three months has continued its recovery started in May. This improvement can be seen in both retail trade and automobile trade and repair. Whereas the corresponding balance has returned above its long-term average in automobile trade and repair, it remains below its own in retail trade.

The balance of opinion on recent trend of workforce size has increased slightly again, due to a marked improvement in the automobile trade and repair, while it is stable in retail trade. In the first sub-sector, this balance has returned above its long-term average.

Surge in the balances of opinion on recent sales at branch level

In August 2020, in the retail trade subsector, the business climate has continued to recover, more markedly than in July. At 84, it has gained 7 points but remains well below its average (100).

In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has also continued to recover. At 103 it has gained 6 points, returning above its average (100).

The improvement in the business climate in these two subsectors is mainly due to the sharp rise in the balances of opinion on sales over the past three months. In August 2020, this balance has jumped in trade and repair of motor vehicles, where it has returned above its long-term average, and has increased markedly in retail trade. However, while it has grown strongly in specialized retail trade, it has fallen again in non-specialized retail trade.

The other balances have contributed more modestly to the variation in the business climate indicators. The balance on the general business outlook for the sector has bounced back in retail trade while it has weakened in trade and repair of motor vehicles. These two balances stand well below their average.

The balance of opinion of retailers on ordering intentions has edged up due to a sharp recovery in specialized retail trade. However, it remains below its average. In trade and repair of motor vehicles, business leaders are more temperate than in July about their ordering intentions: this balance has declined after three consecutive months of increase following the April low. However, it remains clearly above his average.

Revisions

The subsectoral business climate in trade and repair of motor vehicles for July 2020 has been revised downwards by one point. This revision is mainly explained by the inclusion of late responses from businesses.
