2020- n° 154In June 2020, the business managers in the building industry deem their activity prospects
much better than in May Monthly survey of building - June 2020
In June 2020, many more business managers surveyed in the building construction industry than in May have reported that their activity and their staff will increase during the next three months.
Due to the context of the fight against the propagation of COVID-19, statistics published in this Informations Rapides issue could be less accurate than usual. Companies’ responses were collected between 27 May and 19 June 2020, solely online. Consequently, the response rate is a little lower this month than before the beginning of the health crisis, even though it has picked up compared to its low point of April. In addition, for this publication as well as for April (after revision) and May, the method to correct non-response has been modified compared to the usual method which reproduces past responses from non-responding companies. We have considered that the non-responding units in April (after revision), in May then in June would have responded as the average of the responding units of the elementary stratum to which they belong.
In June 2020, many more business managers surveyed in the building construction industry than in May have reported that their activity and their staff will increase during the next three months.
Business managers are more optimistic than in May about their upcoming activity
In June 2020, the business managers in the building construction industry have a much more positive assessment than in the previous month on their activity prospects for the next three months : the corresponding balance has risen again very strongly after having plummeted in April. It has returned above its long-term average, indicating that the business managers are more numerous than average to point out that the activity for the next three months is likely to rise. This is the largest monthly increase since the beginning of the series.
However, business managers are as pessimist as in May regarding their past activity (over the last three months, thus covering the lockdown period): the balance of opinion on past activity is virtually stable after a very strong fall in May. It stands at its lowest level since the beginning of the series (1975).

The opinion of business managers on the upcoming trend in employment has improved strongly
In June 2020, the employment prospects for the next three months have improved compared to May: the balance of opinion on future workforce size has picked up and has almost reached its long-term average.
Nevertheless, more business managers than in May have reported that they had decreased their staff size in the last three months: the corresponding balance of opinion has fallen again, dropping to its lowest level since June 2016.

The opinion on the order books remains deteriorated
In June 2020, as many business managers as in the previous month have considered that their order books are lower than normal: the corresponding balance of opinion remains well below its average, standing at its lowest level since March 2017.
However, even if the new orders may be rarer than usual, a stock of orders is still ongoing: indeed, given their present staff size, business managers consider that their order books provide 7.9 months of work, slightly more than last month and significantly more than the long-term average (5.7 months).
At the same time, the production bottlenecks are loosening: a bit more than a third of the business managers are concerned, significantly less than in the past few months. This share stands as its lowest level since July 2018. In particular, the share of business managers who have declared that they are prevented from increasing their production due to workforce shortage has continued to decline and is now close to its long-term average.
For further information
A balance of opinion is calculated as the difference between the percentage of “increase” responses and the percentage of “decrease” responses.
