2020- n° 153In June 2020, the business climate in the manufacturing industry has continued to
recover but remains deteriorated Monthly business survey (goods-producing industries) - June 2020
According to the business managers surveyed in June 2020, the business climate in industry has improved again sligthly. The composite indicator has gained 6 points compared to May, after losing 30 points in April, a drop unseen since the beginning of the indicator in 1976, under the influence of the health crisis. At 77, it remains very far below its long term average (100). The balances of opinion related to production prospects have bounced back markedly. Especially, the one related to personal production prospects has moved above its average.
Due to the context of the fight against the propagation of COVID-19, statistics published in this Informations Rapides issue could be less accurate than usual. Companies’ responses were collected between 27 May and 19 June 2020, solely online. Consequently, the response rate is a little lower this month than usual, even though it has picked up compared to its low point in April.
In addition, for this publication as well as for April (after revisions) and May, the method to correct non-response has been modified compared to the usual method which reproduces past responses from non-responding companies. We have considered that the non-responding units in April (after revisions), in May and then in June would have responded as the average of the responding units of the elementary stratum to which they belong.

Personal production prospects have recovered
In June 2020, the industrialists’ balance of opinion on the evolution of their personal production prospects for the next three months has recovered sharply. It had collapsed in April, to its lowest level since the serie has existed (1976). In June, it stands once again above its long term average. The balance of opinion on the general production prospects for the sector has also picked up but stays well below its average. The balance of opinion on past production has picked up in June but stays very deteriorated.
More than half of industrialists have declared their order books to be below normal. The balances of opinion on total order books is stable and the one on foreign order books has declined again. Both stand at very low levels although higher than in 2009.
The balance regarding inventories has risen again and stands above its average.
Considering employment, the balance of opinion on past variation has deteriorated again. However, the one on expected variation has continued to recover gradually. Both balances remain significantly below their long-term average.
The climate indicators remain deteriorated in all sub-sectors
The business climate indicators lie well below their average in all sub-sectors. The indicator is still relatively less deteriorated in the agrofood industry, the only sub-sector where the indicator has remained above the low points of 2009.
Revisions
The business climate indicator for May has been revised upwards by one point, due to the integration of late business responses.
