2020- n° 103In April 2020, the business climate in retail trade has continued its steep fall started
in Mars Monthly survey of retailing - April 2020
According to the managers in retail trade and in trade and repair of motor vehicles, in April 2020, the business climate has fallen even more steeply than in March. The composite indicator that measures it, calculated since January 1991, has lost 23 points, linked to the lockdown of the population. This is a new record low, after that recorded in March (-15 points). At 67, this business climate has reached a new lowest level, the previous one, at 75, dating from April 2009.
Given the context of the fight against the spread of COVID-19, the statistics published in this issue of Informations Rapides may be less accurate than usual.
Companies’ responses were collected between 25 March and 17 April 2020, during general lockdown, solely online and without any reminder. Consequently, the response rate is lower this month than usual. Given the usual non-response completion design, relying on past answers for non-responding firms, it is possible that some indicators are overestimated in this publication.

In April 2020, the balance of opinion of business managers on the general business outlook on their sector has collapsed, more especially in trade and repair of vehicles, where business managers are almost unanimously pessimistic about it.
The balances of opinion on ordering intentions and on expected sales have accelerated their fall which started in March. For their part, the balances of opinion on stocks and recent sales are stable or virtually stable.
