Decrease in business start-ups in February 2020 Enterprise births - February 2020

In February 2020, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased (–2.8% after –1.5% in January, seasonally and working-day adjusted). Conventional businesses start-ups slowed down (+0.7% after +6.3%) while micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased again (–6.8% after –9.4%).

Warning:

Due to technical difficulties related to data transmissions between Insee and a business formality center in February, births statistics in February may be more volatile than usual, in particular the share between conventional businesses and micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations.

In February 2020, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased (–2.8% after –1.5% in January, seasonally and working-day adjusted). Conventional businesses start-ups slowed down (+0.7% after +6.3%) while micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased again (–6.8% after –9.4%).

+15.4% over the twelve last months

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last twelve months was still increasing sharply (+15.4%). All the types of business start-ups increased: micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (+18.5%), conventional sole proprietorship start-ups (+17.6%) and company births (+8.5%).

Upsurge of business set-ups in business support activities over the twelve last months

In raw data totted up over the last twelve months, business support activities was the sector that contributed the most to the overall rise (+28 000 business start-ups, which comes to a contribution of 3.9 points to the total)*. Within it, the increase was the higher in the activities of general cleaning of buildings (+6 500 business start-ups over the last twelve months).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Less than a half of business set-ups are self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' registrations

In February 2020, in raw data, the share of micro–entrepreneurs' registrations in the businesses set up over the last twelve months decreased to 46.7%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in January 2020 has been increased by 0.4 points to –1.5% instead of –1.9%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
