According to the managers in retail trade and in trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has again improved in December 2019. At 108, the composite indicator that measures it has gained two points and exceeds more its long-term average (100). This improvement is mainly due to renewed optimism on order intentions, in retail trade and in trade and repair of motor vehicles as a whole. In addition, the composite business climate indicator for November 2019 has been revised downwards by one point and that specific to retail trade has been revised downwards by two points. These revisions essentially result from the integration of late responses from companies.

The balance of opinion on ordering intentions has sharply increased again
In December 2019, the balance of opinion of business managers on their recent sales has sharply increased and has returned above its long-term average. That on expected sales is stable, above its average.The balance on ordering intentions has sharply improved again and exceeds more its average.That on the level of stocks has slightly dropped and, henceforth, it stands below its average. The balance of opinion on expected prices has fluctuated slightly since September above its average.
The business managers remain confident on the general business outlook in their sector. The related balance is stable and stands far above its average.

Significant rebound in the balance of opinion on expected employment
In December 2019, the balance of opinion of business managers about the recent development in employment has straingthened but stays below its long-term average. More precisely, this balance has bounced back in retail trade, while remaining below its average, whereas in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles it is stable, above its average.
Concerning the expected change in employment, the balance has sharply bounced back, while remaining below its long-term average, like the balance in retail trade. In trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles, that balance has decreased, while remaining above its average.
In retail trade, the business climate has clearly improved
In December, in retail trade, the business climate has clearly improved. At 99, the composite indicator has risen by five points and has approached its long-term mean (100). This increase is mainly due to a renewed optimism of business leaders on expected employment. To a lesser extent, the increase in the balance on ordering intentions has also contributed to this improvement.
Regarding sales, the opinion of all retailers on their recent sales has improved. However, the associated balance remains below its average. In contrast, retailers as a whole are less optimistic about their expected sales. In non-specialised retail trade, this balanced has tumbled, falling below its average, while it has recovered in specialised retail trade.
In trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles, the business climate has stabilised at a high level
In December, in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles, the business climate indicator is stable. At 108, it remains well above its long-term average (100). The rise in the balance on ordering intentions is offset by the decrease in that on expected workforce size. The balance of opinion on recent sales has edged up, that on expected sales has bounced back more sharply.
