According to the managers in retail trade and in trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has improved in November 2019. At 107, the composite indicator that measures it has gained two points and stands significantly above its long-term average (100). This improvement is mainly due to renewed optimism on order intentions in the retail trade.
In November, the platform on which companies answer business surveys has been unavailable for a few days. Therefore, the results for November might be revised more than usually for the January publication, which will take into account the answers received late.

Sharp increase in the balance of opinion on ordering intentions
In November 2019, the balance of opinion of business managers on their recent sales is stable, slightly below its long-term average. That on expected sales has very slightly edged down but remains above its average.The balance on ordering intentions has sharply bounced back and stands above its average. That on the level of stocks has very slightly recovered and stands just above its average. The balance of opinion on past prices, bimonthly, has improved whereas that on expected prices, monthly, is stable. Both stand above their average. The balance on cash position, bimonthly, has very slightly increased and stand above its average.
The business managers remain confident on general business outlook in their sector. The related balance has increased again and stands far above its average.

Decline in the balance of opinion on expected employment
In November 2019, the balance of opinion of business managers about the recent development in employment is stable and stands below its long-term average. More precisely, this balance is stable below its average in retail trade whereas in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles it has slightly fallen back, while remaining above its average. Concerning the expected evolution in employment, the balance has decreased again and stands below its average, like the balance in retail trade. In trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles, that balance is stable, above its average.
In retail trade, the business climate is stable
In November, in retail trade, the business climate is stable. At 96, the composite indicator remains below its long-term mean (100). The balance on ordering intentions has strongly bounced back, mainly due to non-specialised retail trade. This balance has returned above its average. Conversely, the balance of opinion on the future trend in workforce size has deteriorated again.
In trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles, the business climate remains at a high level
In November, in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles, the business climate indicator is stable. At 108, it remains well above its long-term average (100). The rise in the balance on general business outlook is partly offset by the decrease in that on ordering intentions, which may reflect a difference in perception between firms’ own situation and that of the sector of activity.
