The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall evolution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In August 2018, the turnover increased sharply in the manufacturing industry (+2.6%) after a decrease in July (−0.5%). It also went up in industry as a whole (+2.5% after a stability in July).
Export turnover bounced back in August (+3.4% after −2.3% in July).
Increase over the last three months (+1.5%)
The turnover rose over the last three months in the manufacturing industry (+1.5%) as in industry as a whole (+1.2%). Within manufacturing, the turnover grew sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (+2.8%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+8.1%), in the “other manufacturing” (+0.7%) and in the machinery and equipment goods (+2.3%). It was stable in the manufacture of food products and beverages.
Sharp increase compared to the previous year (+4.2%)
The turnover grew sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+4.2%) as in industry as a whole (+4.8%). Over this period, the increase was strong in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+31.6%). It also grew up but more moderatly in “other manufacturing” (+3.0%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+5.4%), in the machinery and equipment sector (+3.0%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.7%).

Strong increase in transport equipment (+6.1%)
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment gathered pace in August (+6.1% after +1.0% in July). This rise was driven by a strong increase in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+16.5% after +1.3%). It decreased sharply in the manufacture of motor vehicles (−5.0% after +0.6%).
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment bounced back in export sales (+6.6% after −1.5%).
Bounce back in “other manufacturing” (+1.8%)
The turnover in “other manufacturing” recovered in August (+1.8% after −1.4%). It bounced back in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (+3.1% after −2.1%). It went up sharply in other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (+2.9% after +0.5%). It recovered in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products (+1.7% after −0.6%), in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (+3.4% after −1.1%), in the manufacture of wood and paper products; printing and reproduction of recorded media (+1.5% after −1.0%) and in the chemicals and chemical products (+0.7% after −0.6%). However, it decreased again in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (−2.5% after −7.4%)
Export sales in “other manufacturing” recovered in August (+2.5% after −3.7%).
Sharp increase in machinery and equipment (+3.6%)
In August, the turnover in machinery and equipment went up sharply (+3.6%) after a stability in July. It grew particularly in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+4.3% after +0.2%), in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (+4.5% after +0.5%) and more moderately in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+1.1% after −1.2%).
Export sales in machinery and equipment grew sharply (+3.8% after a stability in July).
Rise in food products and beverages (+1.0%)
The turnover in the manufacture of food products and beverages increased in August (+1.0% after −0.1%). It recovered slightly in export (+0.2% after −0.7%).
Increase in coke and refined petroleum products (+2.5%)
In August, the turnover in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products rose (+2.5% after a stability in July).
Revisions
The variation of the turnover index in July 2018 has been lowered at −0.5% instead of −0.3% in the previous publication. It has not been revised in industry as a whole.
