The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall evolution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In July 2018, the turnover decreased in the manufacturing industry (−0.3%) after a rise in June (+0.7%). It was stable in industry as a whole (after +0.3% in June), due to an increase in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management.
Export turnover fell back sharply in July (−2.2% after +2.4% in June).
Increase over the second quarter (+0.6%)
The turnover rose over the second quarter in the manufacturing industry (+0.6%) as in industry as a whole (+0.4%). Within manufacturing, the turnover grew sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+9.2%) and, to a lesser pace in “other manufacturing” (+0.6%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.4%) and in the machinery and equipment goods (+0.7%). By contrast, it fell in the manufacture of transport equipment (−1.6%)
Sharp increase compared to the previous year (+2.4%)
The turnover grew sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+2.4%) as in industry as a whole (+3.2%). Over this period, the increase was strong in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+31.0%). It also grew up but more moderatly in “other manufacturing” (+2.3%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.1%) and in the machinery and equipment sector (+1.3%). However, it declined in the manufacture of transport equipment (−2.1%).

Downturn in “other manufacturing” (−1.6%)
The turnover in “other manufacturing” fell back in July (−1.6% after +1.2%). It declined in all sectors, and particularly in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (−7.0% after +11.7%) and in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (−2.2% after +0.7%). It decreased more moderately in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products (−1.2% after +0.3%), in the manufacture of wood and paper products; printing and reproduction of recorded media (−1.3% after +0.8%), in the chemicals and chemical products (−0.5% after +0.2%) and in the other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (−0.5% after +0.1%). It dropped again in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−0.5% after −0.4%).
The export sales in “other manufacturing” folded markedly in July (−3.3% after +1.9%).
Virtual stability in coke and refined petroleum products (−0.1%)
In July, the turnover in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products was virtually stable (−0.1% after +2.0%).
Further rise in transport equipment (+1.8%)
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment increased again in July (+1.8% after +1.1% in June). This rise was driven by a rebound in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+3.2% after −0.2%). It slowed down in the manufacture of motor vehicles (+0.4% after +2.4%).
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment fell back in export sales (−2.0% after 4.9%).
Increase in machinery and equipment (+0.6%)
In July, the turnover in machinery and equipment rose again (+0.6 % after +1.0%). It grew in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+1.2% after +0.4%) and in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (+1.0% after +1.1%) while it went down in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−1.2% after +2.0%).
The export sales in machinery and equipment was virtually stable (−0.1 % after +0.7% in June).
Virtual stability in food products and beverages (+0.1%)
The turnover in the manufacture of food products and beverages was virtually stable in July (+0.1% after −1.1%). It fell again in export (−0.5% after −0.9%).
Revisions
The variation of the turnover index in June 2018 has been lowered by 0.1 points in the manufacturing industry (+0.7% instead of +0.8% in the previous publication).
It has been lowered by 0.3 points in industry as a whole (+0.3% instead of +0.6%).
