In July 2018, output in services was virtually stable (−0.1%) after a slight increase in June (+0.2%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In July 2018, output in services was virtually stable (−0.1%) after a slight increase in June (+0.2%).

Services output rose slightly over the last three months

Over the last three months (May to July), services production increased by 0.2% compared to the previous three months.

It grew strongly in household services (+1.9%). It rose more moderatly in business support activities (+0.2%), where the production went up in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+0.4%) but remained stable in administrative and business service activities. The production also increased in information and communication (+0.4%). It remained stable in real estate activities and decreased in transportation and storage (−0.7%) and in accommodation and food services activities (−0.1%).

Output grew sharply over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+2.9%).

It went up strongly in business support (+3.0%), be it in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.0%) or in administrative and business service activities (+2.9%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+5.0%), household services (+6.0%) and accommodation and food service activities (+4.1%). It was stable in real estate activities and decreased in transportation and storage (−0.4%).

Strong decrease in household services

Stable in June, output in household services went down strongly in July (−2.9%). It declined again in arts, entertainment and recreation (−2.4% after −0.8%) and dwindled in other personal services production (−3.9% after +1.5%).

Downturn in business support

In July 2018, output in business support activities turned down (−0.5% after +0.7% in June).

It fell back in administrative and business support activities (−0.6% after +0.6%). It diminished in employment activities (−3.2% after −0.1%), in services to building and landscape activities (−3.0% after +1.6%) and in other administrative and business support activities (−1.8% after −0.5%). It went up again in rental and leasing activities (+4.1% after +1.0%)

Output also decreased in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−0.4% after +0.7% in June), particularly in scientific research and development (−3.6% after −2.1%) and despite an other rise in activities of head offices and management consultancy (+1.4% after +2.4%) and architecture and engineering activities (+1.7% after +0.7%).

Further rise in information and communication

Output in information and communication expanded again in July (+0.6% after +0.3%), due to information services (+9.0% after −6.7%), computer programming (+0.9% after +1.6%) and despite a withdrawal in telecommunications (−1.1% after +0.7%) and edition (−1.1% after +4.6%).

Decrease in accommodation and food service activities

In July, output in accommodation and food services went down (−0.8% after +0.1%). It dwindled in food and beverage service activities (−1.1% after +0.6%) while it was stable in accommodation after −1.9% in June.

Virtual stability in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage was virtually stable in July (+0.1% after +2.1%). It folded in warehousing and support for transportation (−1.4% after +0.2%) and in air transport (−2.2% after +8.2%) whereas it grew in postal and courier activities (+5.1% after −1.1%) and in land transport (+0.5% after +3.5%).

Revisions

The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in June 2018 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points. Initially published at +0.1%, it has been stated at +0.2%.
