In July 2018, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−1.0%) after a stability in June. It kept decreasing in wholesale trade (−1.1% after −0.6% in June). It dwindled in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−1.3% after +1.3%) and more moderately in retail trade (−0.5% after +0.5%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In July 2018, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−1.0%) after a stability in June. It kept decreasing in wholesale trade (−1.1% after −0.6% in June). It dwindled in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−1.3% after +1.3%) and more moderately in retail trade (−0.5% after +0.5%).

The sales volume in overall trade rose over the last three months

Over the last three months (May to July), the sales volume in overall trade rose by 1.3% compared to the previous three months. It went up in wholesale trade (+1.7%) and in retail trade (+0.7%) – it grew in non-specialised stores (+1.4%) and in retail trade not in stores (+2.2%) and it was stable in specialised stores. It grew in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.3%)

The sales volume rose by 2.6% over a year

The sales volume in overall trade grew by 2.6% over a year. It increased markedly in all sectors. It rose by 2.0% in wholesale trade. It also rose sharply in retail trade (+3.2%) – it grew both in non-specialised stores (+4.3%) and specialised stores (+2.2%) and in retail trade not in stores (+5.0%). It went up substantially in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+4.1%).

Further decrease in wholesale trade

In July 2018, the sales volume in wholesale trade kept decreasing (−1.1% after −0.6% in June). It dwindled sharply in other specialised wholesale (−2.8% after +1.4%). It kept decreasing for wholesalers on a fee or contract basis (−1.9% after −1.3%). It fell back in information and communication equipment (−2.5% after +1.4%) and in other machinery, equipment and supplies (−1.1% after +1.1%). By contrast, it bounced back in wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (+0.6% after −1.9%) and in agricultural raw materials and live animals (+0.2% after −1.6%).

Downturn in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In July 2018, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (−1.3% after +1.3%), especially in sale of motor vehicles (−1.1% after +2.2%) and more sharply in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (−5.7% after +1.2%). It kept decreasing in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (−0.8% after −1.1%).

Decrease in sales volume of retail trade

In July 2018, the sales volume in retail trade fell back (−0.5% after +0.5%), especially for the specialised stores (−0.7% after +0.3%). In particular, the sales volume dwindled sharply in automotive fuel (−4.3% after +0.9%), in other household equipment (−1.1% after +0.0%) and in specialised stores of other goods (clothing, shoes etc.; −0.3% after +0.5%). The sales volume was also declining in non-specialised stores (−0.4% after +0.7%). By contrast, it kept increasing in retail trade not in stores (+0.6% after +0.7%).

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should decrease in August 2018 (−0.7%). It should grow by 2.7% year on year.

The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in June 2018 is unchanged at +0.0% (rounded number) compared to the previous release.
