In June 2018, the sales volume in overall trade was stable after an increase in May (+1.4%). It gathered pace in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.2% after +0.8%) and increased slightly in retail trade (+0.4% after +1.2%). By contrast, it fell back in wholesale trade (−0.4% after +1.6%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In June 2018, the sales volume in overall trade was stable after an increase in May (+1.4%). It gathered pace in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.2% after +0.8%) and increased slightly in retail trade (+0.4% after +1.2%). By contrast, it fell back in wholesale trade (−0.4% after +1.6%).

The sales volume in overall trade rose over the last three months

Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade rose by 1.3% compared to the previous three months. It went up in wholesale trade (+1.7%), in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.4%) and in retail trade (+0.6%) – it grew in specialised stores (+0.7%), retail trade not in stores (+2.2%) and non-specialised stores (+0.2%).

The sales volume rose by 3.4% over a year

The sales volume in overall trade grew by 3.4% over a year. It increased markedly in all sectors. It rose by 2.9% in wholesale trade. It also rose sharply in retail trade (+3.1%) – it grew both in specialised stores (+2.7%) and non-specialised stores (+2.8%) and in retail trade not in stores (+7.4%). It went up substantially in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+5.8%).

Further increase in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In June 2018, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles gathered pace (+1.2% after +0.8%), especially in sale of motor vehicles (+2.2% after +0.8%) and more moderately in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (+0.8% after +0.5%). It went up more moderately in sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and related parts and accessories (+0.8% after +3.4%). By contrast, it fell back in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (−1.5% after +0.8%).

Slight increase in sales volume of retail trade

In June 2018, the sales volume in retail trade increased slightly (+0.4% after +1.2% in May), especially for the non-specialised stores (+0.7% after +2.5%) and more moderately in specialised stores (+0.3% after +0.5%). In particular, the sales volume rebounded in specialised stores of other goods (clothing, shoes etc.; +0.4% after −0.5%) and more strongly in sales of information and communication equipment (+3.1% after −0.6%). It increased moderately in automotive fuel (+0.2% after +0.6%) and was virtually stable in other household equipment (+0.1% after +1.3%). By contrast, it dwindled in cultural and recreation goods (−1.0% after +0.6%).

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should increase in July 2018 (+0.3%). It should grow by 3.4% year on year.

Downturn in wholesale trade

In June 2018, the sales volume in wholesale trade fell back (−0.4% after +1.6% in May). It dwindled sharply in non-specialised wholesale trade (−8.5% after +8.1%), for wholesalers on a fee or contract basis (−1.5% after +3.6%) and in wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (−1.0% after +1.7%). By contrast, it bounced back in wholesale of household goods (+0.7% after −1.0%) and increased again in other specialised wholesale (+1.4% after +0.9%).

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in May 2018 has been slightly revised upwards at +1.4% instead of +1.3% initially published.
