The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall evolution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In June 2018, the turnover rose in the manufacturing industry (+0.8%) after a virtual stability in May (+0.1%). It recovered also in industry as a whole (+0.6 % after −0.3 %) in spite of a slight decrease in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−0.2 % after −2.4% ).
Export turnover recovered sharply (+2.4 % after −1.0%).
Increase over the second quarter (+0.6%)
The turnover rose over the second quarter in the manufacturing industry (+0.6%) as in industry as a whole (+0.8%). Within manufacturing, the turnover grew sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+7.2%) and, to a lesser pace in “other manufacturing” (+0.8%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.5%). It fell in the manufacture of transport equipment (−1.0%) and in the machinery and equipment goods (−0.7%).
Sharp increase compared to the previous year (+3.7%)
The turnover grew sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+3.7%) as in industry as a whole (+4.5%). The increase was strong in the mining and quarrying, energy, water supply, waste management (+8.9 %). Over this period, the turnover rose for all manufacturing sector: in “other manufacturing” (+3.5%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+27.2%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+2.1%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.4%) and in the machinery and equipment sector (+1.3%).

Increase in “other manufacturing” (+1.3%)
The turnover in “other manufacturing” rose in June (+1.3%) after a virtual stability in May. It rebounded in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (+11.6 % after −2.1%) and in the other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (+0.9 % after −2.2%). It rose in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (+0.5%) and, in the manufacture of wood and paper products; printing and reproduction of recorded media (+0.7 %). Conversely, it fell back in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−0.3 % after +1.4 %).
The export sales in “other manufacturing” rose again in June (+2.2 % after +1.3%).
Rebound in transport equipment (+1.5%)
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment recovered in June (+1.5 % after −2.8%). This rebound was driven by the manufacture of motor vehicles (+2.5 % after −2.3%) and, to a lesser extent, by the manufacture of other transport equipment (+0.5 % after −3.3%).
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment also rebounded in export sales (+5.0 % after −6.8%).
Further increase in coke and refined petroleum products (+1.8%)
In June, the turnover in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products rose again (+1.8 % after +4.2%).
Increase in machinery and equipment (+0.6%)
In June, the turnover in machinery and equipment rose again (+0.6 % after +0.4%). It grew in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+1.6 % after +1.3%) and in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (+0.7 % after −0.3%) while it was virtally stable in the manufacture. machinery and equipment n.e.c. (−0.1 % after +0.4%).
The export sales in machinery and equipment was virtually stable again (+0.1 % after a stability in May).
Downturn in food products and beverages (−1.0%)
The turnover in the manufacture of food products and beverages fell back in June (−1.0 % after +1.5%). It fell particularly in export (−1.2 % after +1.1%).
Revisions
The variation of the turnover index in May 2018 was unchanged (after rounding) in the manufacturing industry and in industry as a whole.
