In May 2018, the sales volume in overall trade bounced back (+1.3%) after a virtual stability in April (−0.1%). It increased again in wholesale trade (+1.6% after +0.9%). It rebounded in retail trade (+1.1% after −1.7%) and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.8% after −0.4%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In May 2018, the sales volume in overall trade bounced back (+1.3%) after a virtual stability in April (−0.1%). It increased again in wholesale trade (+1.6% after +0.9%). It rebounded in retail trade (+1.1% after −1.7%) and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.8% after −0.4%).

The sales volume in overall trade rose over the last three months

Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade rose by 0.8% compared to the previous three months. It went up in wholesale trade (+0.7%) and in retail trade (+1.2%) – it grew in specialised stores (+1.1%), non-specialised stores (+1.2%), and retail trade not in stores (+1.2%).

The sales volume also expanded slightly in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.2%).

The sales volume rose by 2.8% over a year

The sales volume in overall trade grew by 2.8% over a year. It increased markedly in all sectors. It rose by 2.1% in wholesale trade. It also rose sharply in retail trade (+3.2%) – it grew both in specialised stores (+2.5%) and non-specialised stores (+3.2%) and in retail trade not in stores (+7.3%). It went up substantially in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+5.3%).

Further increase in wholesale trade

In May 2018, the sales volume in wholesale trade went up again (+1.6 after +0.9% in April). It bounced back for wholesalers on a fee or contract basis (+3.5% after −1.3%) and in non-specialised wholesale trade (+6.4% after −2.9%). It increased again in wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (+1.8% after +1.5%), in wholesale of information and communication equipment (+3.9% after +0.1%) and in wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+1.8% after +0.9%). By contrast, it fell back in wholesale of household goods (−0.9%¨after +1.8%).

Rebound in sales volume of retail trade in May

In May 2018, the sales volume in retail trade picked up sharply (+1.1% after −1.7% in April), especially for the non-specialised stores (+2.4% after −3.7%) and more moderatly in specialised stores (+0.3% after −0.8%). In particular, the sales volume rebounded strongly in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco (+3.8 after −6.5%), and sharply in other household equipment (+1.2% after a stability) and in cultural and recreation goods (+1.0% after −2.9%). It dwindled in specialised stores of other goods (clothing, shoes etc.; −0.6% after +0.4%).

Rebound in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In May 2018, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles recovered (+0.8% after −0.4%). It bounced back in sale of motor vehicles (+0.7% after −0.7%) and in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (+0.9% after −0.4%). It kept expanding in sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and related parts and accessories (+3.3% after +3.9%) and in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (+0.4% after +0.7%).

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in April 2018 has been revised upwards at −0.1% instead of −0.2% initially published.
