In June 2018, the turnover in large-scale food retailing fell back (−0.9% after +2.4% in May), especially in food products (−1.3% after +3.6%). Sales decreased again strongly in non-food products (−1.8% after −0.6%). Sales of automotive fuel stabilized after an increase by +2.8% in May.

Sales slipped back sharply in supermarkets (−2.3% after +3.6%) and more sligthly in hypermarkets (−0.4% after +1.4%).

Downturn over the last three months

Over the last three months (April to June), the turnover in large-scale food retailing edged down compared to the previous three months (−0.4%). Over that period, sales fell back both in food products (−0.9%) and in non-food products (−0.8%). By contrast, turnover went up sharply in automotive fuel (+1.9%) Turnover increased in supermarkets (+0.6%) whereas it decreased in hypermarkets (−0.6%).

Growth of 1.7% over a year

The turnover of the past three months in large-scale food retailing rose by 1.7% compared to the same period one year earlier. Sales were virtually stable in food products (+0.1%) whereas they decreased in non-food products (−2.7%). By contrast, sales of automotive fuel surged (+14.8%). Year on year, sales increased more in supermarkets (+2.8%) than in hypermarkets (+1.2%).

The variation in the turnover of large-scale food-retailing for May 2018 has been revised downwards by 0.04 points to +2.4% instead of +2.5% previously published.
