The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall evolution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In May 2018, the turnover was virtually stable in the manufacturing industry (+0.1%) after a downturn in April (−0.3%). It fell in industry as a whole (−0.3% after −0.1%) as a result of the decline in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−2.4% after +1.1%).
Export turnover decreased (−1.1% after −0.2%).
Slight increase on the last three months (+0.2%)
The turnover rose slightly over the last three months in the manufacturing industry (+0.2%). It grew more sharply in industry as a whole (+0.8%) as a result of the increase in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+3.7%). Within manufacturing, the turnover rose in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.0%), in “other manufacturing” (+0.4%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+2.0%). Conversely, it fell in the machinery and equipment goods (−1.3%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (−0.6%).
Sharp increase compared to the previous year (+2.2%)
The turnover grew sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+2.2%) as in industry as a whole (+3.4%). The turnover rose in “other manufacturing” (+2.8%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+20.0%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.7%) and to a lesser extent the machinery and equipment sector (+0.5%). It fell in the manufacture of transport equipment (−2.5%).

Sharp rebound in food products and beverages (+1.4%)
The turnover in the manufacture of food products and beverages recovered in May (+1.4%) after being stable in April.
It rose again in export (+1.4% after +1.1%).
Further strong increase in coke and refined petroleum products (+3.0%)
In May, the turnover in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products rose again sharply (+3.0% after +5.2% in April).
Slight rebound in “other manufacturing” (+0.2%)
The turnover in “other manufacturing” recovered slightly in May (+0.2% after −0.5% in April). It rebounded in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (+2.3% after −0.6%) and in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (+0.4% after −0.9%). Conversely, it fell in the other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (−1.7% after +3.4%) and in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (−2.2% after −11.4%).
The export sales in “other manufacturing” recovered in May (+1.1% after −2.5%).
Increase in machinery and equipment (+0.4%)
In May, the turnover in machinery and equipment rebounded (+0.4%) after a decrease in April (−0.6%). It grew in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+1.0% after −1.2%) and in the manufacture. machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+0.3% after +0.7%) whereas it was unchanged in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (after −2.1% in April).
The export sales in machinery and equipment was virtually stable again (−0.1% after +0.1%).
Sharp decline in transport equipment (−2.8%)
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment contracted again in May (−2.8% after −1.9% in April). It is the case in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−3.2% after −3.1%) as in the manufacture of motor vehicles (−2.3% after −0.6%).
The turnover fell back strongly in export sales (−6.8% after +2.0%).
