In March 2018, output decreased slightly in services (−0.2%) after a sharp decline in February (−1.4%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In March 2018, output decreased slightly in services (−0.2%) after a sharp decline in February (−1.4%).

Services output rose markedly over the last three months

Over the first quarter of 2018, services production increased by 0.6% compared to the last quarter of 2017.

It grew by 0.3% in business support activities, in particular in administrative and business service activities (+0.6%). It rose sharply in information and communication (+0.7%), transportation and storage (+0.7%), real estate activities (+1.1%) and accommodation and food services activities (+1.1%). It also increased in household services (+0.4%).

Output grew sharply over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+3.9%), with an increase in all sectors.

It went up strongly in business support (+4.3%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+5.5%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.4%). It grew sharply in information and communication (+5.5%), accommodation and food service activities (+4.5%), transportation and storage (+2.6%) and household services (+4.0%). It increased more moderately in real estate activities (+1.2%).

Slight decrease in business support

In March 2018, output in business support activities is virtually stable (−0.1%) after a significant decrease in February (−0.9%).

It fell back in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−0.7% after +0.2% in February), particularly in activities of head offices and management consultancy (−1.2%), other professional, scientific and technical activities (−5.5%), architecture and engineering activities (−0.9%) and advertising and market research (−0.7%).

By contrast, output bounced back in administrative and business support activities (+0.8% after −2.4%), notably in employment activities (+1.5%), rental and leasing activities (+1.2%) and other administrative and business support activities (+1.3%).

Further decline in information and communication

Output in information and communication continued to go down in March (−0.2% after −0.3%), due to another fall in edition (−3.9%) regardless of a rise in telecommunications (+1.8%).

Slight decrease in accomodation and food service activities

In March, output decreased again in accommodation and food services (−0.2% after −0.7% in February). It dwindled in accommodation (−2.2% after +2.5%) whereas it bounced back in food and beverage service activities (+0.4% after −1.6%).

Stability in transportation and storage

In March, output in transportation and storage held steady after a sharp decrease in February (−2.6%). It dropped again in land transport (−0.6% after −3.5%). By contrast, it recovered in air transport (+2.6% after −3.3%) and in warehousing and support for transportation (+0.5% after −2.2%).

Upturn in household services

Output in household services increased slightly in March (+0.3%) after a huge decrease in February (−5.0%). It picked up in other personal services (+1.0% after −3.4%) and stabilized in arts, entertainment and recreation after a strong decline in February (−5.9%).

Revisions

The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in February 2018 has been revised upwards by 0.2 points, mainly due to raw series updating. Initially published at −1.6%, it has been stated at −1.4%.
