In 2008, the general government deficit reached 65.9 billion of euros, that is 3.4% of GDP.
The general government gross debt grew by 9.8% and amounted to 1327.1 billion of euros at the end of 2008.
The growth of the general government net debt was lower and represented 61.3% of the GDP at the end of 2008.
