Between 2022 and 2025, more than one in five people experienced material and social
deprivation
In France excluding overseas territories, more than 6 in 10 people who experienced material and social deprivation in a given year were still in that situation the following year. The three‑year persistence rate for material and social deprivation was high: among those experiencing material and social deprivation in 2022, half were still deprived in 2025.
Situations of material and social deprivation can be temporary or sustained, and may recur or span several years. In total, more than 1 in 5 people experienced at least one episode of material and social deprivation between 2022 and 2025.
Over these four years, 17% of the population experienced intermittent material and social deprivation, and 5% were continuously deprived. The majority of people who were deprived in both 2022 and 2025 fell into this pattern of continuous deprivation.
These situations of continuous material and social deprivation were associated with a greater number of deprivations and more often affected people lacking protective resources, such as job stability or academic degrees. In 7 out of 10 cases, they were accompanied by at least one episode of monetary poverty.
