Method for estimating the carbon footprint of tourism consumption 2019–2023
The carbon footprint of tourism consumption is an estimate of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated worldwide to produce the goods and services consumed in France by both domestic and international tourists. These emissions also include those resulting from the use of fuels purchased by tourists and from the occupancy of second homes. These consumption items, recorded within the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), cover both leisure and business tourism.
In 2025, the SDES and Insee propose, for the first time, a methodology to estimate the carbon footprint of tourism consumption. This report presents the conceptual framework and details the methods used to calculate the GHG emissions included in the estimate. The results presented relate to the year 1919 to 2023.
