Insee PremièreEnergy consumption in industry in 2024 The energy bill decreased by 24% but remained well above its 2019 level

Tony Vuillemin (Insee)

In 2024, the energy bill (excluding raw materials) in industry amounted to 17.3 billion euros. For the first time since 2020, a year marked by the health crisis, the energy bill decreased (-24%). However, it remained 1.5 times higher than in 2019, even though consumption fell by 16%. In 2024, the price of all energy sources declined, particularly for large consumers. However, the price of gas remained twice as high in 2024 as in 2019.

Gross energy consumption in industry continued to decrease (-2% after -5% in 2023) and amounted to 23.4 million tonnes of oil equivalent. The decline in energy consumption was driven by the decrease in petroleum products (-21%), while natural gas consumption increased slightly (+2%) and electricity consumption remained almost stable (-1%). Between 2021 and 2023, due to the high price of gas, several establishments had replaced part of their gas consumption with petroleum products. In 2024, the shares of gas and petroleum products in energy consumption returned to a level similar to that of 2019.
