Method for estimating access to environmental amenities in urban areas
Four out of five French people live in cities, half of them in large, dense urban areas. According to the 2016 WHO report, urban green spaces are essential for "sustainable cities." Focusing on the benefits of green spaces in terms of well-being, by examining their access, their coverage in the territory and their availability, the methodology presented here is implemented by Insee and SDES to estimate the access of urban residents to green spaces. It aims to identify the various amenities of interest and how to estimate population access to these spaces. Using data from OpenStreetMap and the IGN TOPO database, a geographic layer representing green spaces of interest was created. Once the green spaces of interest were located, the residents who accessed them on foot were counted using a two-step measurement : identifying the access zone at a certain distance from the space, then calculating the number of people living in this zone by surface intersection. To do this, the method uses data from squares measuring 200 meters on each side.
