Salaries in the hospital civil service in 2023 The average net salary fell by 0.9% in real terms
In 2023, a hospital civil service (HCS) employee earned on average 2,842 euros net per month in full-time equivalent (FTE) terms. This average included all employees of public hospitals and medico-social institutions such as nursing homes, whether they were civil servants, contract workers or medical staff. In nominal terms (current euros), the average net salary increased by 3.9% relative to 2022. Given the continued high inflation in 2023 (+4.9%, after +5.2% in 2022), the average net salary in real terms decreased by 0,9%.
Among employees in the HCS, the average net salary of civil servants decreased in real terms (-1.4%). This evolution was not uniform across hierarchical categories (+0.9% for category C, -1.7% for category B and -2.7% for category A). By contrast, the average net salary of non-civil servants increased by 1.2% in constant euros, while that of medical staff was almost stable (+0.1%).
In 2023, salary disparities (between the highest and lowest salaries) in the HCS decreased. Women's net salaries were, on average, 19.1% lower than men's, a gap down by 0.7 points compared to 2022. The gender pay gap among comparable profiles was at 4.2%, 0.2 points less than in 2022.
Among employees working all year round in 2022 and 2023 for the same employer and with the same work share, representing seven out of ten employees in the HCS, the average net salary was almost stable in real terms (+0.1%).
