The number of people engaged in non‑salaried employment in the cultural sectors almost tripled over 15 years, rising from 92,300 in 2007 to 258,600 in 2022. This growth was driven by an increase in the number of micro‑entrepreneurs, a status that had grown in popularity among cultural professionals since its introduction in 2009. Non‑salaried employment in the cultural sectors differed from non‑salaried employment as a whole in that they included a higher proportion of women, young people, and residents of the Île‑de‑France region. They were also more likely to be multi‑job holders, combining salaried and self‑employed activities.
