Household consumption in 2024 Household consumption accelerated slightly despite the slowdown in prices
In 2024, household final consumption expenditure accelerated slightly in volume (+1.0%),
after a sharp deceleration in 2023 (+0.6%) in a context of high inflation. The year
2024 was marked by a sharp slowdown in consumer prices (+2.2% on an annual average,
after +7.0%), notably for food products (+1.3% after +12.2%). However, expenditure
on these products remained almost stable (+0.1% in volume after -3.1% in 2023). On
the other hand, consumption of services continued to increase, particularly leisure
spending and transport services.
The purchasing power of household disposable income accelerated (+2.6% in total and
+2.1% per consumption unit), with the increase in gross disposable income in current
euros (+4.8%) exceeding the growth in prices. As a result, the household savings rate
increased at 18.2% and remained at a higher level than before the crisis.
