General government account in 2024 With revenues less buoyant than expenditure, the deficit rose
In 2024, the general government deficit stood at €168.6 bn, after €151.7 bn in 2023, or 5.8% of gross domestic product after 5.4% in 2023. Revenues grew faster than in 2023, but remained less dynamic than activity. Despite the decline in spending linked to the energy crisis, expenditure accelerated, driven by inflation-indexed benefits. The general government deficit was mainly attributable to central government. However, the local government deficit widened, while the social security surplus narrowed. Public debt stood at 113.2% of GDP, after 109.8% in 2023.
