Material and social deprivation in 2024 One person in eight was materially and socially deprived
At the beginning of 2024, in France, 13.0% of the population living in ordinary housing,
or 8.6 million people, were in a situation of material and social deprivation. In
mainland France, this rate stood at 12.7%.
The share of people experiencing material and social deprivation decreased slightly
compared to early 2023. In particular, the deprivation of one week's holiday a year
away from home fell over a year. Internet deprivation became residual. However, the
overall deprivation rate remained relatively high, 0.6 points above the average observed
between 2013 and 2020.
Unemployed people, people living in single‑parent families and social housing tenants
were the most exposed to the risk of deprivation.
