One third of owners have two homes or more
In France, 9.7 million people own at least two homes, either alone or with other people, they represent a third of all homeowners. On the whole, these multi-owners are older and more well-off than single owners. The more properties they own, the higher is their standard of living. Six multi-owners out of ten own two homes, while 3% own ten or more.
Two homes out of three in the private sector are therefore owned by at least one multi-owner. This situation is more common in touristic departments and in the central towns of major conurbations. Apart from their main residence, multi-owners rent the majority of their homes. Rented properties are often located close to their place of residence, although there are significant differences between areas. Among privately-owned properties, half of the rented property are owned by at least one person who owns five homes or more, whereas these people account for only 4% of owners.
