Insee PremièreA sharp rise in demand for personal care services by 2050

Grégoire Borey, Olivier Diel, Luigi Muzzolin (Insee)

In metropolitan France, Martinique and Reunion, 3.9 million households used personal care services in 2019, representing 13.8% of all households. In metropolitan France, the rate of use of these services is higher in the western departments. It was lower in Martinique and Reunion.

These differences were partly explained by population characteristics: older households and those with a high standard of living were more likely to use personal care services. The ageing of the population therefore contributed significantly to the increase in the number of households using these services (+7.5%) compared with 2013, which was higher than the increase in all households (+4.5%).

This growth is expected to continue in the coming years, and would be more pronounced on the Atlantic coast and in the south-east. According to the central scenario, 5 million households would use these services in metropolitan France, Martinique and Reunion by 2050.
