Total consumption of goods in volume

  • Source: INSEE.

Engineered goods: sharp downturn

In January 2025, household consumption of engineered goods fell sharply (-2.4% after +1.9% in December 2024), mainly due to the decline in purchases of durable goods (-3.9%) and, to a lesser extent, textile-clothing products (-1.7%).

Durable goods: sharp downturn

In January 2025, consumption of durable goods fell sharply (-3.9% after +2.9% in December 2024 – revised data). This fall is mainly due to a drop in purchases of transport equipments, especially motorcycles and new cars. This sharp decline in January 2025 is the result of the counterpart to the sharp increases in spending on these products in December 2024, in a context of application of new regulatory standards in December 2024, then in January 2025. Household equipments, such as household appliances, electronic products and computers, also fell sharply.

Textile-clothing: decline

In January 2025, spending on clothing and textiles declined (-1.7% after +1.6% in December 2024 – revised data). This drop is mainly due to a fall back in spending on clothing and, to a lesser extent, on shoes and leather.

Other engineered goods: slight downturn

In January 2025, consumption of “other engineered goods” fell slightly (-0.3% after +0.4% in December 2024 – revised data).

Energy: slowdown

In January 2025, household energy expenditures slowed down (+0.2% after +2.4% in December 2024 – revised data). Lower spending on super unleaded and gasoline was not offset by higher spending on fuel oil and butane-propane. Gas consumption fell back, while electricity consumption slowed sharply.

Revisions

The monthly change in total household consumption of goods for December 2024 has not been revised (after rounding). The one for November 2024 has been revised downwards by 0.3 points, due to a revision in consumption of agri-food products. Since the previous publication, new information has been incorporated and the coefficients for seasonal adjustments (SA) and working day adjustment (WDA) have been updated.

For more information

*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (WDA-SA).

Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:

– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);

– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);

– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).

The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.

Sources–This indicator of household consumption of goods is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) (consumer price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Bank of France, the Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES) of the ministry in charge of ecological transition, the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Trade Association for Rubber and Polymers (SNCP) (renamed elanova on 1st October 2022), the Board of Oil (CPDP), the Pharmaceutical Companies Association (LEEM), GFK, Logista.
