Insee PremièreIndustrial energy consumption in 2023  The energy bill increased by 5% in 2023 after doubling between 2019 and 2022

Tony Vuillemin (Insee)

In 2023, the energy bill (excluding raw materials) in industry amounted to 22.7 billion euros. It slowed down significantly, increasing by 5% in current euros over the year, compared to +52% in 2022 and +40% in 2021. Electricity was the only energy whose average price rose (+31%).

Energy bills rose sharply in 2023 for smaller energy consumers, while they decreased for larger consumers. Although large consumers paid slightly more for electricity in 2023, they benefitted from the significant drop in the market price of gas. Smaller consumers faced higher prices for both electricity and gas.

Energy bills increased for establishments most dependent on electricity; those in the food industry (+37%) and the manufacturing of electrical and electronic equipment (+62%) were the most impacted.

Gross energy consumption in industry continued to decline (-5%, after -6% in 2022) and stood at 23.7 million tonnes of oil equivalent.
