Insee FocusProvisional employment estimates in 2023 Employment slowed down in most regions

David Guillas (Insee)

Between the end of 2022 and the end of 2023, employment in France kept increasing, but at a slower pace than in the previous two years: +262,000 jobs in 2023, after +391,000 in 2022 and +977,000 in 2021. Salaried employment grew by 172,000 jobs in 2023, less than half as much as in 2022, a clear slowdown mainly led by the market services sector. Conversely, non-salaried employment sped up in 2023: +90,000, after +58,000 jobs.

In 2023, employment increased again in all regions, but at a slower pace in most of them. The increase was sharper than average in French Guiana, La Réunion, Bretagne, Martinique and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
