Warning

This month, some companies in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailer (CL1) were unable to respond in time to the monthly industry survey used to calculate the industrial production index; their responses have been estimated.

As a result, October index and evolution may be revised next month for this branch and the whole industry.

In October 2024, output was stable over a month in the manufacturing industry (after ‑0.7% in September 2024) and was virtually stable in the whole industry (‑0.1% after ‑0.8%).

Over a month, manufacturing output was stable and variations within branches offset each other

In October 2024*, output fell back in the manufacture of transport equipment (‑2.4% after +1.9%): it decreased in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailer (‑2.9% after +0.5%) and in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (‑2.2% after +2.8%). Output decreased again in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑1.0% after ‑1.3%). It fell back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑0.5% after +0.7%). On the contrary, output bounced back in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.8% after ‑0.4%) and increased again in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+4.8% after +4.1%). Finally, it was stable in the “other manufacturing industries” (after ‑1.9% in September).

Over a year, manufacturing output declined by 0.8%

Cumulative output over the last three months (August to October 2024) was lower than that of the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (‑0.8%), as well as in the whole industry (‑0.4%).

Over this one-year period, output went down sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (‑5.0%): it decreased strongly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailer (‑10.7%) and more modestly in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (‑1.2%). Output decreased also in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑2.7%) and the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (‑5.3%). On the contrary, it increased in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.8 %), the “other manufacturing industries” (+0.4%) and the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.9%).

Output in main energy-intensive industries remained low compared to their 2021 level

In the context of high electricity and gas prices invoiced to firms given the contracts agreed in 2022 and 2023 for 2024, energy-intensive industries are particularly exposed to rising production costs, which may affect their output. Output over the last three months (August to October 2024) in these industries remained thus down sharply compared to that of the second quarter of 2021 (last quarter before the sharp rise of energy prices), particularly in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑23.5%), the manufacture of glass and glass products (‑19.6%), the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑17.2%) and the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑11.8%).

* All data in this publication are seasonally and working days adjusted (SA-WDA). In the commentary, percentage changes by sub-branches are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a sub-branch takes into account its weight and the scale of its change.

The methodology used to build and calculate the industrial production index (IPI) is detailed in the “Documentation” tab of this publication.
