In October 2024, household consumption of engineered goods sharply retreated (1,3%), after a 1.6% rise in September 2024 – revised data. This decrease is explained by a drop in spending on textile-clothing (-5.1%) and, to a lesser extent, on durable goods (-0.6%).

In October 2024, spending on clothing and textiles strongly retreated (‑5.1% after +6.4% in September 2024 – revised data). This decrease is mainly explained by a fall in spending on clothing and, to a lesser extent, by a decline in the purchases of shoes and leather. Spending on clothing-textile remains nonetheless 2.0% higher than its October 2023 value.
Durable goods: slight downturn
In October 2024, consumption of durable goods slightly went back down (‑0.6% after +0.8% in September 2024 – revised data). This decrease is mainly due to the decline in spending on housing equipments, especially computers and telephones, as well as a drop in purchases of used cars.

Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);
– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);
– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
Sources–This indicator of household consumption of goods is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) (consumer price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Bank of France, the Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES) of the ministry in charge of ecological transition, the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Trade Association for Rubber and Polymers (SNCP, renamed elanova on 1st October 2022), the Board of Oil (CPDP), the Pharmaceutical Companies Association (LEEM), GFK, Logista.
