graphiqueTotal consumption of goods in volume
Engineered goods: sharp downturn
In October 2024, household consumption of engineered goods sharply retreated (1,3%), after a 1.6% rise in September 2024 – revised data. This decrease is explained by a drop in spending on textile-clothing (-5.1%) and, to a lesser extent, on durable goods (-0.6%).
Textile-clothing: sharp downturn
In October 2024, spending on clothing and textiles strongly retreated (‑5.1% after +6.4% in September 2024 – revised data). This decrease is mainly explained by a fall in spending on clothing and, to a lesser extent, by a decline in the purchases of shoes and leather. Spending on clothing-textile remains nonetheless 2.0% higher than its October 2023 value.
Durable goods: slight downturn
In October 2024, consumption of durable goods slightly went back down (‑0.6% after +0.8% in September 2024 – revised data). This decrease is mainly due to the decline in spending on housing equipments, especially computers and telephones, as well as a drop in purchases of used cars.
Other engineered goods: virtual stability
In October 2024, consumption of “other engineered goods” was virtually stable for the second consecutive month.

Food products: sharp rebound
In October 2024, household food consumption sharply rebounded (+1.2% after ‑1.4% in September 2024 – revised data). This increase is mainly due to the rise in agri-food products, especially “other food products”, while the consumption of agricultural products (unprocessed products) decreased again.
Tobacco consumption decreased.

Revisions
The monthly change in household consumption of goods for September 2024 has not been revised (after rounding). Since the previous publication, new information has been incorporated and the coefficients for seasonal adjustment (SA) and working day adjustment (WDA) have been updated.
For more information
*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (WDA-SA).
Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);
– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);
– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
Sources–This indicator of household consumption of goods is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) (consumer price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Bank of France, the Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES) of the ministry in charge of ecological transition, the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Trade Association for Rubber and Polymers (SNCP, renamed elanova on 1st October 2022), the Board of Oil (CPDP), the Pharmaceutical Companies Association (LEEM), GFK, Logista.
