Insee FocusConsumption and savings by household category in 2022 The most well-of households save a quarter of their income, while the most modest save nothing

Mathias André, Gabriel Buresi (Insee)

Household final consumption expenditure increases with the standard of living: the top 20% spends 2.3 times more on average than the bottom 20%. Public consumption expenditure complements household consumption. It benefits all households, but accounts for a higher proportion of the income of the lowest‑income households.

The savings rate rises sharply with standard of living, level of education and socio‑professional category. People in households around the median devote an average of 6% of their net disposable income to savings, compared with an average of 11% for the population as a whole, while the most modest cannot save and the top 20% save a quarter (27%) of their net disposable income.
