graphiqueBreakdown of energy
Engineered goods: further decrease
In August 2024, household consumption of engineered goods continued to decline (-0.4% after -0.3% in July 2024 – revised data). The sharp drop in spending on durable goods (-1.5%) was offset by the rebound in spending on textile-clothing (+1.4%) and the further increase in spending on “other engineered goods” (+0.4%).
Durable goods: further decrease
In August 2024, the decline in durable goods consumption amplified (-1.5% after -0.5% in July 2024 – revised data). This decline is mainly due to the sharp drop in spending on capital goods (-4.2% after +4.0% in July 2024 – revised data), especially electronics, furniture, computers and accessories, and household appliances.
Textile-clothing: rebound
In August 2024, spending on clothing and textiles rebounded (+1.4% after -0.8% in July 2024 – revised data).
Other engineered goods: further increase
In August 2024, consumption of “other engineered goods” continued to rise (+0.4% after +0.5% in July 2024 – revised data).

*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).
Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);
– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);
– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
Sources–This indicator is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (consumer price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Bank of France, the French Federation of Automobile Manufacturers (CCFA), the Department of Data and Statistical Studies (SDES), the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Federation of Rubber and Plastics Industries (SNCP), the Board of Oil (CPDP), GFK, Logista, the International Union Committee of Automobile and Motorcycle (CSIAM), etc.
