On January 1, 2024, French housing stock, excluding Mayotte, stood at 38.2 million housing units. 82.2% of dwellings were main residences and 54.8% were one‑family dwellings. Since 2010, the growth of housing stock slowed down ; since 2018, the number of housing units rose regularly, by 0.9% per year, compared to +1.2% per year between 2000 and 2009.

3.7 million of dwellings were second homes and occasional dwellings ; after increasing slightly between 2011 and 2017, their proportion remained stable since then. Similarly, the proportion of vacant dwellings stabilized over the last four years. In 2024, 3.1 million housing units were vacant.

57.0% of households owned their main residences ; this proportion decreased slightly since 2014.

Housing stock grew more quickly in the overseas territories than in metropolitan France.
