Monthly change: +0.5% in August; year-on-year change: +1.8%
In August 2024, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.5% over one month, after +0.2% in July. This rise in prices was mainly due to the rebound in prices of manufactured products from the July sales (+1.4% after ‑2.3%), and notably the one in prices of clothing and footwear (+6.2% after ‑10.7%). The prices of services also increased over one month (+0.5% after +1.2%) especially those of accommodation services (+7.2% after + 12.6%). Over one month, the prices of food rebounded slightly (+0.3% after ‑0.2%), while those of energy fell back (‑1.3% after +1.4%). Over one month, the prices of tobacco remained stable compared with the previous month.
Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices increased by 0.2% in August 2024 after +0.4% en July.
Year on year, consumer prices went up by 1.8% in August 2024, after +2.3% in July. This drop in inflation resulted from the very sharp slowdown in prices of energy (+0.4% after +8.5%), due to the slowdown of electricity (+10.5% after +19.5%) and the fall back of petroleum products (‑8.2% after +1.1%). Conversely, the prices of services accelerated over one year (+3.0% after +2.6%). Year on year, those of food (+0.5% after +0.5%), manufactured products (‑0.1% after 0.0%) and tobacco (+8.7% after +8.7%) evolved at a rate close to that of July.
Slight acceleration in core inflation year on year
Year on year, core inflation increased slightly, reaching +1.7% in August 2024, after +1.5% in July.
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) increased by 0.6% over one month, after +0.2% in July. Year on year, it slowed down: +2.2% in August 2024, after +2.7% in July.
