Output in services slowed down in January 2024 (+0.4%) Index of services production - January 2024
In January 2024, output in services slowed down over a month (+0.4%), after a significant increase in December 2023 (+2.2%).
In accordance with the European Business Statistics Regulation (EBS Regulation) and its Implementing Regulation, the index of sales volume in overall trade and the associated turnover indices are now disseminated in reference and base 100 in 2021.
Furthermore, the weights of these indices have been updated. The weights taken into account for the period from January 2018 are thus based on turnover data for 2021 taken from the national accounts. Taking these new weights into account leads to revisions of the indices over the same period.
Finally, the seasonal and working-day adjustment models (SA-WDA) have also been updated over the recent past, in order to improve the quality of the index.

In January 2024, output in services slowed down over a month (+0.4%), after a significant increase in December 2023 (+2.2%).
Over a month, output went up in most of service sectors
In January 2024, output accelerated in real estate activities (+2.9% after +1.7%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (+2.3% after +0.9%). It increased in activities professional, scientific and technical activities (+0.4% after -0.1%) and slowed down significantly in administrative and support service activities (+0.2% after +3.1%) and transportation and storage (+0.2% after +6.2%). It fell back in accommodation and food service activities (-0.8% after +2.5%) and was almost stable in information-communication (-0.1% after +2.3%).

Over a year, output in services was up by 2.3%
Output for the last three months (November 2023 to January 2024) was 2.3% higher than the same period a year earlier. It increased substantially in information-communication (+4.2%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (+7.2%). It went up more moderately in professional, scientific and technical activities (+1.9%), administrative and support service activities (+2.3%), transportation and storage (+1.7%) and accommodation and food service activities (+1.9%). On the contrary, it dropped in real estate activities (-2.2%).
Revisions
The monthly change in the services production index in December 2023 has been revised upwards by 1.0 point (after rounding) to +2.2%.The change in the raw series has been revised upwards significantly as a result of the updating of the weights, particularly for transportation and storage activities; this effect has been partially mitigated by the revision of the SA-WDA models.

- How to read: in the services industries, the SA-WDA percentage change in output between November and December 2023 is revised by +0.94 points: +5.22 points due to the revisions of raw data and -4.28 points due to the update of SA-WDA parameters. In particular, the updating of weights is included in the revision of raw data.
