In January 2024, sales volume in trade decreased by 0.7% Sales volume in wholesale and retail trade - January 2024
In January 2024, the volume of sales in trade dropped by 0.7% over a month, following an increase of 1.4% in December 2023.
In accordance with the European Business Statistics Regulation (EBS Regulation) and its Implementing Regulation, the index of sales volume in overall trade and the associated turnover indices are now disseminated in reference and base 100 in 2021.
Furthermore, the weights of these indices have been updated. The weights taken into account for the period from January 2018 are thus based on turnover data for 2021 taken from the national accounts. Taking these new weights into account leads to revisions of the indices over the same period.
Finally, the seasonal and working-day adjustment models (SA-WDA) have also been updated over the recent past, in order to improve the quality of the index.
Further information on these changes is available in the Documentation tab of the web version of this publication.

In January 2024, the volume of sales in trade dropped by 0.7% over a month, following an increase of 1.4% in December 2023.
In January 2024, the drop in the volume of sales was mainly due to wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles
In January 2024, the volume of sales decreased sharply in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑4.7% after +2.2% in December 2023). The drop was particularly marked in the sale of motor vehicles (‑7.1% after +3.5%), in the context of a tightening of the environmental bonus and penalty measures.
The volume of sales also decreased in January 2024 in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.4% after +2.5%). This decrease was mainly due to the agricultural raw materials and live animals (‑5.6% after +9.3%) and the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: ‑1.2% after +2.9%).
Lastly, the volume of sales bounced back in January 2024 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.0% after ‑1.1%), both in specialised stores (+1.3% after ‑0.5%) and non specialised stores (+0.7% after ‑1.1%). The retail trade not in stores remained almost stable after the sharp decrease of December 2023 (+0.1% after ‑5.2%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales sped up again for the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: +1.7% after +0.7%). It partially recovered for the “other household equipment” (furniture, hardware, appliances, etc.: +2.3% after ‑3.9%).
Early retail trade estimate for February 2024
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased slightly in February 2024 (‑0.2% over a month). From December 2023 to February 2024, it would be 0.2% lower than that of the same three months a year earlier.
