Insee Focus2 to 6 million additionnal households in France between 2018 and 2050

Virginie Gamblin (Insee)

The number of households in France would continue to increase over the coming decades if the recent demographics trends continue, but not as strongly as before 2018. Depending on the scenarios considered, there would be between 32 and 36 million households in 2050, compared with 30 million in 2018 and 22 million in 1990. This increase would be based more on cohabitation behavior than on population growth (which is tending to slow down). The proportion of adults living alone or in one-parent family would continue to rise, at the expense of the proportion of couples. The ongoing territorial disparities observed over the recent period would lead to a significant reduction in the number of households in 13 departments.
