Over a month, output fell back in the “other manufacturing industries”

In August 2023, output fell back over a month in the “other manufacturing” industries (‑1.2% after +1.2%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑1.0% after +0.3%). It decreased again in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑0.6% after ‑0.4%). On the contrary, output recovered in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.5% after ‑1.2%): it bounced back strongly in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (+8.6% after ‑4.1%) but fell back in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (‑3.2% after +2.8%). It increased in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+0.8% after +1.0%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+1.9% after ‑3.4%).

Over a year, manufacturing output was up by 0.5%

Cumulative output over the last three months (June to August 2023) was higher than that of the same three months of the previous year (+0.5%) in the manufacturing industry, as well as in the whole industry (+0.7 %).

Over this one-year period, output expanded markedly in the manufacture of transport equipment (+9.4%), both in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+8.2%) and in that of “other transport equipment” (+10.3%). It increased in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+3.8%), in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.5%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+8.7%). On the contrary, output declined in the “other manufacturing” industries (‑1.7%), and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑1.8%).

Over a year, output declined sharply in some energy-intensive industries

In the context of high electricity and gas prices invoiced to firms given the contracts agreed in 2022 for 2023, energy-intensive industries are particularly exposed to rising production costs, which may affect their output. Output over the last three months (June to August 2023) was thus down sharply compared to that of the same three months a year ago in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑33.7%), the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑18.4%) and the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑10.6%).

The monthly evolution of the July 2023 manufacturing index is revised downwards

Compared to the previous release, the evolution of the manufacturing index between June and July 2023 is revised downwards by 0.3 points (after rounding) at +0.4% instead of +0.7% due to the inclusion of late responses. The evolution of the index for the whole industry is also revised downwards by 0.3 points (after rounding) at +0.5% instead of +0.8%.
