Cereal prices rebounded over a month but fell strongly year on year
In June 2023, cereal prices rebounded over one month (+3.4% after ‑10.0% in May and ‑7.0% in April). Soft wheat prices were up anew (+2.8% after ‑9.8% and ‑6.7%), due in particular to uncertainty over the extension in July of the agreement authorising exports from Ukraine and Russia via the Black Sea. Maize prices also rebounded (+3.2% after ‑12.5% and ‑6.2%), due in particular to the drought in the United States. Year on year, cereal prices dropped (‑37.5% in June after ‑43.2%), mainly due to a base effect (they had risen sharply throughout 2021 and in the spring of 2022). However, they were back slightly above their level of two years earlier (+7.8% compared with June 2021).
Oil seed prices also bounced back in June 2023 (+3.5% over one month, after ‑5.1% in May and ‑7.8% in April). They were driven up by rapeseed prices (+4.2% after ‑4.7% and ‑8.4%), due in particular to the drought in the United States and Canada, by soybean prices (+1.8% after ‑2.2% and ‑11.1%) and by sunflower prices (+0.4% after ‑7.3% and ‑3.8%). Year on year, oil seed prices collapsed by 41.4% in June 2023 (after ‑49.6% in May). They were 16.0% lower than in June 2021.

Animal prices fell over one month, but remained up significantly year on year
In June 2023, animal prices fell again over one month (‑0.4% after ‑2.0%). Pig (‑1.3% after ‑5.0%) and poultry (‑0.8% after ‑1.0%) prices continued to fall, while those for large cattle (+0.3% after ‑1.7%) rebounded slightly.
Year on year, animal prices slowed down, but continued to rise markedly (+7.6% in June 2023 after +9.7% in May) driven by a substantial rise of pig prices (+26.0% after +26.3%) and, to a lesser extent, poultry (+5.7% after +12.4%) and large cattle (+1.9% after +2.7%) prices. In June 2023, animal prices were 32.8% higher than in June 2021.

For further information
The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. Their variations should therefore be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.
The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.
Further informations (including IPPAP and IPPIAP methodologies) are available through the “Documentation” tab on the web page of this publication.
