The proportion of people experiencing material and social deprivation increased in 2022

At the start of 2022, 14% of the population of metropolitan France experienced material and social deprivation. This proportion has reached its highest level since 2013.

In a context of rising energy prices, one person in ten lived in a household that could not afford to heat its home properly. Compared with 2020, the material and social deprivation rate has risen the most in rural and intermediate density municipalities, because their residents spend more on energy.
