In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In March 2023, output in services was almost steady over one month (‑0.1%), after a light increase in February (+0.2%).

Over one month, output evolved in a contrasting manner depending on the sector

In March 2023, output fell back in professional, scientific and technical activities (‑1.3% after +0.5%), and in accommodation and food service activities (‑1.8% after +0.5%) with a marked contraction in food and beverage service activities (‑2.3% after +0.8%). On the contrary, it rebounded sharply in information-communication (+1.1% after -0.7%), arts, entertainment and recreation (+1.2% after -1.0%) and more slightly in transportation and storage (+0.2% after -2.3%). Output slowed down in administrative and support service activities (+0.9% after +1.5%). Finally, it was virtually stable in real estate activities (‑0.1% after +2.9%).

Over a year, output was up substantially (+6.7%)

Output in services went up sharply in the first quarter of 2023 (+6.7%) compared to that of the same quarter of 2022. It increased markedly in professional, scientific and technical activities (+7.0%), information-communication (+7.0%) and more strongly in accommodation and food service activities (+14.7%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (+21.9%) due in particular to a base effect linked to the health situation a year earlier (Omicron wave). Output also increased, but less sharply, in administrative and support service activities (+3.8%), transportation and storage (+2.4%) and real estate activities (+2.5%).

Revisions

Compared to the previous release, the month-on-month percentage change in the index of services output in February 2023 has been revised upwards. Initially published at ‑0.2%, it is now evaluated at +0.2% after rounding.
