In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In March 2023, the volume of sales in trade fell over a month (‑0.6%) after a virtual stability in February (‑0.1%).

In March 2023, the decrease in the volume of sales was concentrated in wholesale trade

In March 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell again (‑1.2% over a month after ‑0.3% in February). The fall is largely due to the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: ‑2.9% after ‑0.5%), the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (‑2.0% after +0.1%) and food, beverages and tobacco (‑1.5% after ‑0.6%).

Concerning the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, the volume of sales increased again in March 2023 (+0.5%), but less than in February (+1.0%).

Lastly, the volume of sales in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles was virtually stable in March 2023 (+0.1% after ‑0.2% in February). It sped up markedly in retail trade not in stores (+4.1% after +0.3%) and went down in non-specialised stores (‑0.7% after a stability). It was virtually stable in specialised stores (‑0.1% after ‑0.4%). Within the latter, the volume of sales fell in all sub-sectors, with the exception of automotive fuel where it grew sharply (+9.2% after ‑2.0%). The drop was particularly pronounced in the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: ‑1.0% after +0.1%), and in the cultural and recreation goods (‑4.0% after +0.6%).

Early retail trade estimate for April 2023

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in April 2023 (‑1.3% over a month). From February to April 2023, it would be 1.9% lower than in the same three months a year earlier.

The volume of sales of the first quarter of 2023 decreased by 1.4% over a year

The volume of sales of the first quarter of 2023 in overall trade went down (‑1.4%) compared to that of the first quarter of 2022. It decreased both in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑2.7%) and in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.4%). In contrast, it grew significantly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+5.0%). Within retail trade, the year-on-year volume of sales fell in non-specialised stores (‑3.2%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑3.4%), while it was virtually stable in specialised stores (+0.1%).

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in February 2023 has been revised downwards at ‑0.1% (after rounding), instead of +0.2% as initially published.
